Transforming Sanitation at Rushe Primary School: A New Chapter for Over 700 Pupils

Through a collaborative effort with local stakeholders, KESU constructed 20 modern toilet stalls, including a private room specifically designed for girls to manage menstruation with dignity. This crucial addition will help reduce absenteeism and foster a supportive environment for adolescent girls. "The new facilities have given us confidence and made school more comfortable," said Joseline, a 15-year-old pupil. "We no longer have to worry about missing school during our periods." Teachers at Rushe Primary School have also noted a remarkable improvement. "Before this project, sanitation was a daily struggle, and it greatly impacted both the pupils’ health and their academic performance," shared Mr. Emmanuel, a teacher. "Thanks to KESU, our school now has clean, safe, and adequate toilets, which will boost both attendance and concentration in class." The impact of this project goes beyond infrastructure. KESU has also conducted hygiene and sanitation workshops to ensure the facilities are properly maintained and to instill lifelong habits of cleanliness among the students. These efforts align with KESU’s mission to create healthier learning environments and empower communities for sustainable development.

Globally, inadequate sanitation is a leading cause of waterborne diseases, which claims thousands of lives annually, particularly among children under five. In communities like Rushe, the lack of proper toilets exacerbates the spread of illnesses such as diarrhea, cholera, and dysentery. By improving sanitation infrastructure and promoting hygiene education, KESU not only enhances school attendance but also protects students from preventable diseases, ensuring they grow up healthier and more resilient. As the pupils and staff of Rushe Primary School settle into this new chapter, the gratitude is palpable. The improved sanitation facilities stand as a testament to what can be achieved when organizations like KESU work hand in hand with communities to address critical challenges. With better hygiene, enhanced attendance, and renewed hope, Rushe Primary School is poised for a brighter future.
